![]() ![]() That planned rapid expansion got checked, however, by the learning curve involved in building out a brewery and restaurant in a strictly industrial zone of Portland. Soon, the trio realized that they needed to expand. Great Notion co-founders James Dugan, Andy Miller, and Paul Reiter-all three North Portland neighbors-were early adopters of these styles at their Kickstarter-funded flagship location. And they were a hit, resulting in a consistently jam-packed brewpub can releases that sold out in hours and fans across the county offering beer trades for Great Notion's limited supply. Meanwhile, some Midwest and Northeast breweries-like Goose Island, the Alchemist, and Trillium-were exploring different flavors: full bodied, syrupy, high-octane stouts pungent, puckery sours and hazy, juicy, New England-style IPAs. The brewery's original spot on 2204 NE Alberta Street opened on New Year’s Day 2016 since then, the brewery has experienced meteoric growth even as some old guard Portland brewer like Bridgeport and Portland Brewing have recently shuttered doors. A bit of history: throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, so-called "West Coast-style" IPAs-boozy hop bombs that used clarifying agents for greater translucency-were dominating tap lists west of the Rockies. Reiter's referring to the brewery’s maple syrup and coffee breakfast stout, which has won several awards in the past few years, including a gold medal at the 2018 World Beer Cup. "We’re going to have pastries and breakfast burritos to go. A rep for Great Notion tells Eater Seattle that the brewery will serve food: “We are leaning towards doing something with fried chicken or Nashville hot chicken.“ We got our own custom blend Great Notion coffee," says Paul Reiter, Great Notion's co-founder and business head. The Portland following may give it an initial boost, although any added features and amenities might help. When it arrives in Ballard, Great Notion will certainly have some competition from the more than 12 brewing companies already in the neighborhood (including the recently-opened Aslan taproom), not to mention quite a few beer bars (such as Skal). Great Notion opened its second brewery in Northwest Portland this year, complete with a coffee shop, sandwiches, and a full production facility - and has another one on the way for the area early next year. It has also released a culinary series of beers, such as Mochi (Japanese mochi ice cream flavors), Jammy Pants (berry jam), and Baklava (nuts and honey). Great Notion has built a strong following in Portland and scored several gold and silver medals at the World Beer Cup, along with other accolades. Though details are still coming into focus, the taproom will land at 5101 14th Avenue NW sometime before the summer, right in the heart of a brewery-heavy area, which includes local stalwarts such as Stoup and Reuben’s Brews. Great Notion - an acclaimed Portland-based brewery known for its hazy IPAs and quirky beers with food-influenced flavors - announced that it will open its first Seattle outpost in Ballard next year. Some serious Oregon beer is on the way to Ballard.
